Roy J. Plunkett invented Teflon fifty years ago. In order to honor Mr. Plunkett, the DuPont Company decided to perform a search looking for the most significant innovation in Fluro-polymer application technology during the previous five years. It would be the first such award in fifty years. There were three products chosen, one which received the Plunkett Award and the other two were honored as the next best applications.
 The first place was awarded for the use in space suit technology in the aerospace program.
The next two were for application in human transplants and for the invention of LUMENYTE. The winners were within a very elite group. John Robbins, leader of the Lumenyte team, accepted the LUMENYTE award from the chairman of the Board of DuPont.
